How Western Australia car stamp duty works

When you buy a car in Western Australia, stamp duty is charged on the dutiable value, which is the price you paid or the market value, whichever is higher, including GST. Light vehicle (up to 4.5 tonnes). The rate applies to the whole value, not just the amount over a threshold. Heavy vehicles are 3% capped at $12,000. The duty is paid to RevenueWA when the vehicle is registered or transferred into your name, so it sits on top of the purchase price and the usual registration costs.
