How Western Australia car stamp duty works
When you buy a car in Western Australia, stamp duty, also called vehicle stamp duty or car tax, is charged on the dutiable value, which is the price you paid or the market value, whichever is higher, including GST. Light vehicle (up to 4.5 tonnes). The rate applies to the whole value, not just the amount over a threshold. Heavy vehicles are 3% capped at $12,000.
