How New South Wales car stamp duty works

When you buy a car in New South Wales, stamp duty is charged on the dutiable value, which is the price you paid or the market value, whichever is higher, including GST. Standard passenger-vehicle rate (seats up to 9). Caravans and camper trailers are exempt, and eligible DVA pensioners are exempt. The duty is paid to Revenue NSW when the vehicle is registered or transferred into your name, so it sits on top of the purchase price and the usual registration costs.
